The purpose of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine (EAPM) is to bring together groups and individuals in Europe who are interested in promoting the science of perinatal medicine, for the benefit of mothers and their children, in particular by:

  • Promoting and disseminating the study, research and knowledge of all aspects of perinatal medicine, to attain the optimal physical and mental health for mothers and their children by improving the quality and provision of perinatal care in Europe.
  • Contributing to the improvement of teaching standards in the profession.
  • Proposing guidelines and standardizing criteria for auditing, evaluation and clinical care in perinatal medicine.
  • Fostering collaboration between the various disciplines interested in perinatal care as well as friendship between individuals from different European Countries.

Announcement of “The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health Commission on The Future of Neonatology” at the congress of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine in Lisbon, June 22-26, 2022

The European Association of Perinatal Medicine is delighted to announce that a new Lancet Child & Adolescent Health Commission on “The Future of Neonatology” will be announced at our upcoming congress by the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, the Honourable Mrs Stella Kyriakides.

Led by Professor Daniele De Luca, president of the European Society for Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (Université Paris Saclay), together with Professor Neena Modi, president-elect of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine (Imperial College London), Professor Peter Davis (The Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne), Professor Steven Abman (University of Colorado), and other global neonatal leaders, and supported by the Deputy Editor of The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health, Esther Lau, the Lancet Child & Adolescent Health Commission will address the need for a more effective research and development pipeline for newborn medicines and devices, efficient and incremental reductions in the many uncertainties in clinical newborn care, strong partnerships with parents, families and former patients, and recognition of the importance of newborn health to health and wellbeing across the life-course, and hence to populations and national economies across the world.

The topic is urgent and important. There has only ever been a single medication specifically developed for neonatal conditions. To this day over 90% of medicines used in newborn babies lack adequate data on safety, efficacy, and dosage, and many medical devices are similarly inadequately tested,  “hand-me-downs” from developments in other age groups.  Promising therapeutic advances have not reached the cot-side because current regulatory, operational, and financial considerations are challenging.

The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health Commission on "The Future of Neonatology" will bring together global researchers, stakeholders, parents and former patients, to define recommendations to ensure that newborn babies no longer suffer research inequity, and that their healthcare is based on strong evidence and products designed to meet their needs.
