The European Congress on Intrapartum Care (ECIC) is a biennial international scientific event bringing together perinatal health professionals — midwives, obstetricians, anesthesiologists and pediatricians — from across Europe and beyond.

Its founding principle is straightforward: the quality of care for women and newborns is best served when midwifery and obstetric expertise work as one, combining their strengths within a shared scientific framework.

This conviction is embodied in the congress’s institutional architecture, which unites three leading learned societies — the European Association of Perinatal Medicine (EAPM), the European Midwives Association (EMA), and the Special Interest Group in Intrapartum Care (eleven members, eight countries) — in a genuine partnership built on complementarity and mutual respect.

The ECIC upholds the highest standards of scientific excellence, with communications spanning evidence-based clinical advances, person-centred approaches to birth, and cutting-edge research on safety and prevention.

The intrapartum period remains one of the most active and promising fields in perinatal research, and the congress serves as a key European platform for translating this momentum into concrete improvements in practice — from updated clinical guidelines to new care pathways and long-term prevention strategies.

Every two years, the ECIC renews its commitment to making the care around birth safer, more humane, and continuously informed by the best available evidence.

We look forward to welcoming you to Strasbourg on 18-20 March 2027 for the upcoming 8th European Congress of Intrapartum Care (ECIC 2027).
